The ascent of Bengali young wicketkeeper-batsman Abishek Porel has been further solidified by the 2025 IPL season. His mother is Anima Porel, and his father, Somnath Porel, played kabaddi. Beginning at age five, he worked as an apprentice for Pradip Mondal at the National Sporting Club. He then trained with his cousin, pacer Ishan Porel, at Utpal Chatterjee's academy. His batting fluidity and wicketkeeping reflexes were honed by these early foundations.

Domestic Breakthrough

During the Ranji Trophy in February 2022, Porel made his Bengal debut, helping the team chase a target of 350 with a calm 53 in the second innings. He shown his dynamic cricketing repertoire in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and Vijay Hazare List A formats the same year, including a 20 off 14-ball cameo in October's T20 debut.

Entering the IPL Arena

DC signed Porel in March 2023 to replace the injured Rishabh Pant for ₹20 lakh. When he took the field against the Gujarat Titans on April 4, he made an immediate impression with his 20 runs off of just 11 balls (SR 181.8) and a brilliant catch that got rid of Hardik Pandya. Porel's diving grab of Rohit Sharma against the Mumbai Indians was a pivotal occasion, earning him the moniker "Spiderman of Chandannagar."

IPL 2024–25: Cementing His Place

Porel took use of his opportunity to feature in all 14 league games after being acquired by DC for ₹4 crore prior to the 2024 season. At a scorching strike rate of 159.5, he scored 327 runs, including two important fifties. He played in 13 games in 2025 and scored 301 runs at SR 146.8 with one fifty. Beyond his stats, he provided steadiness with his quick keeping and left-handed batting.

Role in Delhi Capitals

Porel has changed from being a backup to being essential. He adds vital momentum with his combative cameos, particularly in the final overs. Abishek has performed admirably as a versatile wicketkeeper-batsman, striking a balance between runs and dependability behind the stumps, while Pant has been handling his fitness and leadership responsibilities.
