When Markram joined the Pretoria Boys High School cricket team in 2010, he immediately made an impression. He spent almost ten months at Tuks Cricket Academy after graduating from high school in 2012, where he was coached by De Bruyn, Smit, and Noordwyk. He even captained the Tuks 2 team during this time. In October 2014, he made his first-class debut for Northerns, when he led the team in runs scored.

Under‑19 Captain to International Mainstay

Markram made history by leading South Africa to the 2014 Under-19 World Cup championship in the United Arab Emirates and finishing as the tournament's top run scorer. With stints at Walkden (2016), Paarl Rocks (2018–19), and Hampshire (2019), he maintained consistent domestic and franchise play. In late 2017, he made his Test and ODI debuts, promptly scoring hundreds in each format.

He replaced Faf du Plessis as South Africa's second-youngest ODI skipper in early 2018, at the age of just 23.
