Born on February 2, 1995, in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, Balapuwaduge Kusal Gimhan Mendis rose to prominence through Sri Lanka’s age-group cricket system, having captained the U-19 national side at the 2014 ICC Under-19 World Cup.

Known for his graceful strokes and poise under duress, Mendis has grown to be one of the team's most seasoned players. As of the 2025 season, he is still a key player in all formats and embraces his roles as a husband and father off the field. Childhood and Family History

In Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, Kusal Mendis grew up in a modest yet encouraging family. During Kusal's early years, his father, Dinesh Mendis, who drove a trishaw, played a crucial role in getting him to cricket practices and games. At home, Maheshika Shivanthi, his mother, offered a lot of emotional support. Kusal Mendis has continued to play a pivotal leadership role in Sri Lanka's 2025 campaign, often serving as vice-captain and mentoring emerging talents in the squad. A standout performance came in the ODI series against New Zealand, where he played a vital knock of 74 not out at Pallekele to seal the series. He also contributed a significant innings during the Test match against Bangladesh, helping Sri Lanka secure a first-innings lead of over 200 runs.

In a surprise mid-season development, Mendis joined the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 playoffs as a replacement for Jos Buttler. He made his IPL debut in the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians, scoring a quickfire 20 off 10 balls but was dismissed in a rare hit-wicket incident. Kusal Mendis has a modest and private existence away from the field. On February 12, 2021, he wed Nishelle Fernandez in Colombo.
