N. Tilak Varma
Position: Wk-Batter
N. Tilak Varma born on November 8, 2002, in Hyderabad, has emerged as one of the most promising young talents in Indian cricket. From his early days playing tennis-ball cricket in the lanes of Balapur to becoming a key figure in the Mumbai Indians (MI) lineup, his journey is a testament to determination and skill.
Early Life and Family
Tilak hails from a humble background. His father, Namboori Nagaraju, worked as an electrician, while his mother, Gayatri Devi, is a housewife. He has an elder brother, Tarun Varma. Recognizing his son's potential, Tilak's parents supported his passion for cricket, even though they had limited resources. At the age of 11, he was spotted playing tennis-ball cricket by coach Salim Bayash, who took him under his wing and trained him at the Legala Cricket Academy in Lingampally. Bayash's dedication was evident as he would ferry Tilak to and from the academy, a journey of more than 40 km each way, until Tilak's family relocated closer to the academy.
Rise in Domestic Cricket
Tilak Varma's talent shone brightly in domestic cricket. He captained Hyderabad in the 2024 Ranji Trophy Plate Group and stood out with consistent batting performances, including back-to-back centuries. Though Hyderabad didn’t win the tournament, Tilak’s leadership and form caught national attention. In T20 cricket, he created history by becoming the first cricketer to score three successive centuries across formats—two in T20 Internationals and one in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy—marking a rare and remarkable feat in modern cricket.
IPL Debut and Role in Mumbai Indians
In 2022, Tilak Varma was picked by Mumbai Indians in the IPL auction for ₹1.7 crore. He made an immediate impact, scoring 397 runs in 14 matches at an average of 36.09 and a strike rate of 131.02.
In 2023, he followed up with 343 runs, averaging 42.88 with a striking rate of 164.11, further strengthening his role in MI’s batting core and earning his T20I debut for India.
In IPL 2024, Tilak solidified his reputation by scoring 416 runs, continuing his steady upward trajectory.
By the 2025 season, he remained a crucial part of MI’s middle order, scoring 343 runs across 16 matches. During a tactical move in a match against Lucknow Super Giants, he was “retired out” to allow a better matchup, and he accepted the decision gracefully, saying:
"I was just thinking that they made the decision for the team’s purpose. So, I took it in a positive way."
He followed it up with back-to-back half-centuries, showcasing his resilience, team-first attitude, and mental toughness, further earning praise from teammates and fans alike.
Family Life
Tilak Varma has largely kept his personal life private, but his family's support has been a well-known pillar of his success. His father, Namboori Nagaraju, worked as an electrician, while his mother, Gayatri Devi, is a homemaker. Despite financial challenges, they supported his cricketing dream from a young age. There is no public information confirming that Tilak is married or has children. His early coach, Salim Bayash, also played a vital role, training and mentoring him through his foundational years in Hyderabad.
Future Prospects
In June 2025, Tilak signed a short-term deal to play four County Championship matches with Hampshire, marking a key milestone in his red-ball development. This move offers him valuable exposure to English conditions, potentially strengthening his case for a future place in India's Test squad.
Tilak Varma's journey—from the narrow lanes of Hyderabad to becoming a cornerstone of the Mumbai Indians lineup and now stepping into English first-class cricket—is a story of resilience and ambition. His dedication, skill, and humility continue to inspire a generation of aspiring cricketers. As he evolves further on and off the field, the cricketing world watches with great anticipation.
