Shepherd had a difficult childhood in Baracara. He once said, "We never went to school with shoes on our feet," characterizing river trips and dirt roads as everyday occurrences. He attributes his discipline on and off the field to his mentor, Carl Moore of Tucber Park Club.

Mayank's sheer number of runs helped him establish himself in domestic cricket.
