Sameer Rizvi
Position: All-Rounder
Sameer Rizvi, who was born on December 6, 2003, in Loiya, Meerut (after moving to Lal Kurti), Uttar Pradesh, has risen progressively from playing cricket at the local level to the IPL.
Early Life & Family
- Parents: After initially opposing Sameer's cricketing aspirations, his father, property dealer Haseen Rizvi, finally gave him his complete support. Haseen experienced a cerebral hemorrhage at the time of his Ranji debut, a medical emergency that further inspired Sameer. Ruksana Rizvi, his mother, stays at home.
- Siblings: Sameer has four siblings: an older brother named Afseen, a sister named Naba, and another whose identity has not been made public.
- Wife/Son/Daughter: There is no official record of a wife, son, or daughter, hence he is single and childless.
Cricket Foundation & Mentorship
Sameer started playing cricket at an early age: Under-14 (2014–16), Under-16 (2016–19), and Under-19 (2018–20). In 2019, he joined the Uttar Pradesh senior team. Sameer's love for the game was sparked by his maternal uncle Tankeeb Akhtar, who helped him refine his fundamental abilities at Meerut's Gandhibagh Academy.
One particularly noteworthy instance was when Sameer, then eight years old, dazzled Suresh Raina with his fielding, winning Raina's support and even a pair of goggles.
Domestic Breakthroughs
Known for his ability to strike hard against spin, Sameer made his first-class cricket debut on January 27, 2020, in the Ranji Trophy at the age of 16. On December 11, 2021, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he made his List A debut.
With 455 runs in nine innings, two hundreds (including the fastest century in the tournament's history off 47 balls), and the most sixes, Sameer led the Kanpur Superstars' scoring records in the first-ever UP T20 League in 2023.
He demonstrated his leadership and hitting prowess in the 2023 Under-23 State A tournament by captaining Uttar Pradesh, hitting the most sixes (37), and scoring 84 in the final—further solidifying his value to Delhi Capitals
IPL Stardom
Interest in the IPL was sparked by Sameer's domestic exploits. After being sought by CSK and other teams, he sold for an incredible ₹8.4 crore in the IPL 2024 auction in December 2023, setting a record for an uncapped player.
He trained with MS Dhoni and picked up finishing skills from Rinku Singh before joining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2024. Despite having a statistically quiet campaign, his technique and demeanor were praised.
He furthered his upward trend in December 2024 when he hammered a double century in an Under-23 State A match.
Playing Style & Role
Because of his dynamic, spin-attacking strokes, Sameer, a right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spinner, is known as "right-handed Suresh Raina." He may speed up the innings or finish strongly, and he usually bats in places 4–7.
His death-overs skills have improved under Dhoni and Rinku Singh's guidance, and Raina's goggle motion demonstrates how intense his fielding is.
His Under-19 and Under-23 accomplishments, along with his IPL promise, put him firmly on the radar even if he hasn't yet played for the senior Indian team.
Personality & Education
Sameer finished his tenth-grade education around the age of 20, a little later than his colleagues, despite his athletic commitments. Despite his quick rise to stardom, he is still grounded, a Sagittarius, and did not attend college.
Looking Ahead
Sameer Rizvi has had a rapid rise from playing on Meerut fields to being a valuable asset in the IPL. He is positioned for national notoriety thanks to his strong domestic foundation, experience in the IPL, and unrelenting power hitting. His unmarried position and unwavering devotion to cricket allow him to achieve even more in the future.
